Forest Psytrance

Forest psytrance is a subgenre of psychedelic trance that emerged in the early 2000s, primarily from the Scandinavian underground scene. Rooted in the spirit of outdoor gatherings and night-time forest parties, it developed as a reaction to the more commercial and melodic directions that mainstream psytrance was taking at the time.

The sound of forest psytrance is defined by its dark, earthy and deeply organic character. Basslines are typically rolling, heavy and hypnotic, sitting low in the mix and driving the track forward with an almost ritualistic momentum. Percussion is intricate and layered, often featuring complex polyrhythmic patterns that reward attentive listening on the dancefloor.

Atmospherically, forest psytrance draws heavily from nature — animal recordings, processed organic sounds, insects, wind and water are frequently woven into the sound design. This creates a feeling of being deep in a forest at night, surrounded by unknown creatures and ancient energies. The music is intentionally immersive and often unsettling, designed to push the listener into altered states of consciousness.

Typical BPM range sits between 146 and 150, allowing the bassline to breathe and the atmospheres to develop fully. Tracks are usually long — often exceeding eight minutes — giving the music time to build, evolve and take the listener on a complete journey.

Key influences and pioneering artists in the global forest psytrance scene include Derango, Traskel, Drone Bixie, Jahbo, Grapes Of Wrath and Ka-Sol. Labels such as Parvati Records, Yggdrasil Records, Sanaton Records, Schlabaduerst Records and Stoneage Records helped establish and define the genre internationally throughout the 2000s and 2010s.

Moon Koradji Records has been part of the forest psytrance community since its founding in 2007 in Kyiv, Ukraine. The label has always gravitated towards the darker, more organic end of the psychedelic spectrum, releasing music from artists across Scandinavia, Eastern Europe, Japan, India, Argentina and beyond who share a common vision of deep, forest-rooted sound design.

Today forest psytrance remains a thriving underground movement, celebrated at outdoor festivals and small forest gatherings around the world. Events such as Ozora Festival in Hungary, Boom Festival in Portugal, and countless smaller regional gatherings continue to provide a spiritual home for forest psytrance artists and their dedicated community of listeners.
